Common Indigestion Symptoms

Common Indigestion Symptoms

Indigestion symptoms can be caused by a number of reasons, but generally, improper eating habits are the primary reasons why most people experience this condition.  When you were younger, you might have eaten everything you wanted to, and still managed to feel perfectly fine afterward.  But as people grow older, sometimes certain foods (e.g. spicy foods) can cause your stomach to twist and turn – leaving you in a state of unbearable agony.

What Are The Typical Indigestion Symptoms?

The different manifestations of indigestion symptoms usually depend on the kinds of food you eat; and, since most people have different tolerances to various types of foods, the symptoms also manifest themselves differently.  Usually, people experience extreme pain in their stomach, but there are still other common symptoms that can occur, including the following:

  • Bloating
  • Belching
  • Burning/searing pain in the abdominal area
  • Nausea/vomiting
  • Acidic taste in the mouth
  • Flatulence
  • Growling stomach

These manifestations can also worsen when a person is within a stressful environment.  In addition, it is necessary to note that, although heartburn might occur while experiencing indigestion symptoms, the latter is still a different condition from the former.  As such, treatment for both heartburn and indigestion also vary.

Who Can Experience Indigestion Symptoms?

As opposed to the popular belief that acid indigestion is only experienced by older men, women are just as much likely to experience indigestion symptoms.  Additionally, these symptoms of indigestion can occur among any age group—not just the elderly.

Eating foods that are not “in sync” with the normal functions of your digestive system can cause indigestion and other nasty digestive disorders.  Aside from this, the following are some of the factors that can trigger the onset of indigestion and its complications.

  • Overeating or eating too fast
  • Binge eating
  • Eating fatty foods or junk foods
  • Ulcers
  • Pregnancy
  • Smoking cigarettes
  • Irritable bowel syndrome
  • Taking some painkillers or antibiotics
  • Drinking alcoholic beverages

Probiotics for Alleviating Indigestion

Improving the condition of your digestive system is one way to start your battle against indigestion, and this is where probiotics come in.  Probiotic supplements contain active microorganisms that aid in digestion and promote regular metabolism.  Many probiotic supplements can be taken on a daily basis, and regular intake of such supplements can even add other health benefits to your body: not just to your digestive system. With a healthy digestive system, indigestion symptoms are less likely to occur.
