Practical Indigestion Remedies

Indigestion remedies are all around us. Most of the commercially known remedies are available at your local pharmacy or supermarket. Some home based remedies can be found in the kitchen cupboards, bedroom cabinets and even in your backyard garden.  And the simplest indigestion remedies of all could just be a minor change in eating habits and lifestyle.

Indigestion, also known as gas pain, heartburn, bloating or simply, an upset stomach, is usually a feeling of heaviness and discomfort after eating a meal. However you experience it, one thing is for sure: it is painful and uncomfortable. And usually, the only thing on your mind is relief– not just any relief but quick and fast relief. The good news is, indigestion is something we’d all like to get rid of, and because of this, there are well documented indigestion remedies that are proven to be effective time and time again.

Indigestion can be relieved by making some very minor changes in your eating habits.  As an example, chewing your food more than usual can make a huge difference in preventing indigestion symptoms. This means that your ingested food is reduced into smaller chunks causing enzymes to break it down faster. Another example is when you drink less water than usual during meals. The reason behind this is that as you drink more water, enzymes get flushed and there are fewer enzymes present to break down your food. If you implement both of these suggestions, you will drastically reduce your chances of indigestion after meals.

Aside from what was mentioned previously, there are also some indigestion remedies that can be homemade. Most of these are either cheap products you can buy from the local supermarket or things already inside your kitchen cupboards. Some of the following useful and effective indigestion remedies include:

  1. Peppermint Oil – Use peppermint oil in an herbal tea or swallow in capsule form. These capsules should be available at your local supermarket or drugstore.
  2. Chamomile – Similar to peppermint oil, chamomile is used in herbal tea or taken as a capsule.
  3. Lemons – Freshly squeezed lemon juice provides a calming and soothing effect on the digestive system.
  4. Mint leaves – Aside from being swallowed in capsule form or used in herbal tea, mint leaves can also be eaten along with or after meals.

Indigestion has a variety of causes including certain medicines you are currently taking or certain medical conditions you are currently suffering from. However, the main reason for indigestion results from unhealthy eating habits and lifestyle. Whatever the cause or reason for the condition of indigestion, the means to quick indigestion relief is what really counts.
